Thanks Woodstock . The exact location? That's rather difficult. I don't have GPS coördinates on my camera. I just remember it's close to Zermatt and to the west.

Magnificent study of one of the most majestic views I've ever seen. Somehow in Zermatt the Matterhorn doesn't immediately strike you as being the height and grandeur it really is - but get out into the landscape and you're surprised by it at every turn. You have brilliantly captured it - (would be my winner in the Majestic Mountains Contest by miles !!!)

Thanks Kawaracer. The highlights in the sun are close to burnt out, but are not. If I lowered the brightness on these parts, the magic was lost. So I kept them in :-)

Behind The Lens

Location

Switserland, we where walking through the Zermatt valley and admiring the Matterhorn all the way. There are a lot of pathways around the famous mountain, but a lot of them are closed in the winter. This photo was taken near the end of a path with this great view with the cabin.

Time

We got up early in the morning for the best light, we walked and walked for hours on paths that where freshly covered with snow. It was cold, a bit misty and snowing... This photo was taken around 1pm, at the end of our walk when the sky opened up. So you see, it's not always the morning shots that are the greatest.

Lighting

The whole morning the light was nice but it was blocked by mist or snow... and when it wasn't: it just did not do the mountain justice. I was disappointed to see that the harsh mid day sun was upon us, but then saw the beauty of the shadowplay and the light on the snow that blows off the mountain top. I took the shot and was very pleased.

Equipment

It was shot on a Sony A7II with the 70-200mm 4.0. No tripod, no flash, no filters...

Inspiration

Going to the Zermatt valley with one purpose... Shooting the Matterhorn in all it's glory. As a climber I have enormous respect for mountains, especially this one. It has claimed so many lives and it inspires so many people to keep on climbing it. So I wanted to capture the beauty, serenity and the danger in one shot. I think I pulled it off.

Editing

The post-processing involved removing some cables running through the shot and converting it in black and white with Silver Efex Pro 2. Afterwards I did some minor tweeks with Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I usually take as little gear with me as possible. It's one of the reasons I bought the Sony A7II so I could travel with something more compact. Most of the times I go around with my Zeiss 24-70mm 4.0. If I'm going for nature walks I bring along my sony 70-200 4.0 and a Rokinon 14mm 2.8. If I'm planning on shooting portraits I bring my Zeis Batis 85mm 1.8. For sports it's usually only the 70-200.

Feedback

As this photo proves: the early bird does not always get the worm. Getting up early and having the morning light has massive advantages but it is not the only light good enough for great pictures. I know photographers that 'only shoot at sunrise or sunset'. Don't limit yourself that way. Keep on shooting and use the light in any way it comes to you. For something similar: just go to Zermatt during winter times, walk the paths around the Matterhorn and find yourself a good spot. There are a lot of cabins and other foreground elements around. For the effect on top of the mountain... best time is after a fresh batch of snow and windy.
