Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in winter 2009 in St. Petersburg, Russia. While I was shooting till 3 years, it was one of the first attempts at walking and shooting the city at night.

Time

It was well after midnight when the metro is closed and the street is almost deserted. On this street, which runs parallel to the main street, there was not a single passer-by and cars. In the winter of 2009 there was virtually no snow, and the cold was weak, which is not typical for Russia. About an hour ago dropped some snow, so the road was covered with a small layer of it.

Lighting

Four canopy over the road created in the center of four shade, which became the basis for the establishment and the names of the picture - Mr. X.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D300, with an Nikkor 85 1.4D. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Noticing that the lights create just four shadows, I asked a friend, with whom we walked, to stand in the center between the lamps and quite a bit and slowly walk.

Editing

Survey was conducted in RAW format processing is mainly consisted in debt transfer to black and white to save the whole atmosphere that I felt at the time of the shooting.

In my camera bag

Usually, when I go out on a photographic walk around the city, I take the "reportage" kit. It includes Nikon D3s (although now I started using Nikon Df), Nikkor 80-200 2.8, Nikkor 24-70 2.8, Sigma 15mm 2.8 Fisheye, and Nikkor 50 1.8. With such a focal length and aperture I can take pictures of practically any urban plot at any time of the day. In 2009, I was limited to Nikon D300, Nikkor 85 1.4D and Tokina 16-50 2.8.

Feedback

Always remember that the city becomes a totally different at night. And a lot of people at this time do not usually see the city, so even the most famous places can become completely unrecognizable and new. In addition, it is best to take pictures on weekdays, not weekends, when people on the street at least. Sometimes it is possible to walk to places of filming in advance, noticing interesting and understanding what the plot can be built and what is necessary for it.
