Location
I took this picture near Cornwall, ON, Canada at the Milles Roches Campground during a camping trip right at the Canada/US Border. This picture was taken looking onto the isolated strip of the Saint-Laurence River.Time
This was during the evening at sundown probably at 7 or 8 PM in the middle of summer. We were camping on the other side of the island and notice the beautiful sky but from the shadow side, so decided to take a walk to see it from the sunny side just before having our supper. Needless to say, it was a spectacular sight and one of the most beautiful moments. We intend to go back next year and we already know which camp site to book.Lighting
The lighting is the focal point of this photo. I was lucky for the cloud formation that we had, which masked the sun enough to cut out the glare but still radiate on the clouds. The still water gave a ominous tone that doubled the effect of the sky that kept me captivated for the whole sunset.Equipment
The most important piece of equipment that I used for this capture was my circular polarizing filter. Not only did it allow to tone down the exposure of the sky and extract more color, but it also gave a semi-transparency to the water in order to capture the smooth rock bed. Aside from the filter, I used a Nikon D600 with a wide angle Nikkor 18-35 mm lens mounted on a Vanguard tripod and ball head.Inspiration
I was looking forward to this family camping trip for months since we discussed and booked the camp ground. I had all my photography gear ready for any scenario, including primarily milky way photography and sunrise / sunset photography. I particularly love capturing landscapes and night photography but it is a challenge to get to the best spots and it with trips like these that I am particularly able to take the time to scope out the best spot and be patient to get the best capture. That particular day I spent a good hour at that edge of the island just waiting to get the right angle of the sun and cloud cover.Editing
This picture didn't drive me to do too much post-processing. As I do with all my photography I did some basic adjustments on the clarity and vibrance using Lightroom, and cropped it to tweak the composition to my liking. In my camera bag
I carry my D600 with three Nikkor lenses, 18-35 mm, 105 mm, and 70-300 mm. I'll have a spare battery, extra SD cards, remote trigger, viewfinder eye cap, as well as a polarizing filter, ND10 filter and IR filter. Depending where I'm going I'll either carry my bulkier Vanguard tripod and ball head, or my smaller Joby Tripod.Feedback
Travel. The best way to get those wow! landscape pictures are to explore and find remote locations that offer that exceptional view. There is a preparation to bring practical photography equipment to maximize your capture, but the first and most essential step in my opinion is to go out there and discover great locations. Often these are also found by going a few extra steps off the beaten track.
