Just started playing my turntable again! Love it. I remember Shure stylus', I have a Pickering stylus on a 40 year old Technics turntable. Still plays like new

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this from my dad's basement while visiting during the holidays. I was shooting a picture a day for a project 365 and was looking for classic technology laying around the house.

Time

I shot this one later in the night once everyone was in bed and I was left to explore the house for interesting subjects.

Lighting

The lighting was hard to manage. I had recently purchased a cobra flash and was experimenting different lighting angles and exposure times to capture the right glow on the record and player head. In the end I had shot the light from the side to get the flash shine from the front edge of the record.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 crop format camera with a full frame 105mm f2.8 macro lens. I had the camera setup on a tripod to sharpen the image with a slight long exposure time (1/40s). The flash used was a Nikon SB-600.

Inspiration

I was looking for some old technologies in my dad's basement. I knew he had a great collection of older equipment and wanted to find something that I relate to cherished when I was young.

Editing

I amplified the vibrance of the colours using Adobe Lightroom, along with some shadow and highlight adjustments. I then used the Topaz filter suits to adjust clarity and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

My bag now carries my Nikon D600, 18-35mm f3.5-4.5 wide angle lens, 105mm f.2.8 macro lens, and my 50mm f1.8 lens for low light and fast conditions. I'll lug around a spare battery and SD card, as well as a remote trigger, polarizing filter and long exposure filters. Depending on my needs, I'll typically carry my SB-600 flash or gorilla pod that I won in another Viewbug contest.

Feedback

My best advise if you are looking to shoot macro is to look around your own surroundings. There are always interesting things to capture and observe at a macro level.
