Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in NYC's Chinatown on Mott Street (I believe) just below Canal Street. It is literally one of my favorite places in NYC to eat.

Time

This was taken mid morning. We were on the hunt for soup dumplings.

Lighting

It is very hard to shoot in NYC because of the buildings. Either you find an open space or you need overhead sun. Luckily the sun was overhead just enough to bring out all the colors on the street.

Equipment

Canon TSi camera, kit lens. I was walking around NYC and didn't want to carry my whole bag with me. AND I did not want look too touristy. That's just asking for trouble.

Inspiration

Chinatown is a special place with tons of color and movement. It's hard to get a good shot because there is so much foot traffic and the Vendors want to sell stuff, not have people photograph it. But if you can get a shot, do it.

Editing

I try to do as little post-processing as possible. I simply crop, align, and adjust lighting and color so that the image is as close to what I saw as possible. I want the picture to tell its story as directly as possible.

In my camera bag

Camera, a couple of lens (kit, telephoto, macro), filters, back up SD card, remote.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to get into the middle of the street, on the ground, or on top of a bench. The right angle makes the shot. Shoot multiple times with different ISO and distances. You will be amazed at the results.
