Loving the different types of light in this photograph and it is quite marvelous. Very pleasing to the eye, half of it dark and angry half of it bright and welcoming.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during the storms of lightning that have raged in southern Sardinia at the end of August this year, in the village of San Gavino Monreale

Time

As you can imagine it was night, in the distance I saw these lightning, then I put the camera on the stand and I started counting the time between a lightning and the other and shoot

Lighting

The photo was taken with natural light and long exposure, is held down and the button is released when lightning is seen. With an evening with lots of lightning it's just a matter of time and the perfect shot arrives.

Equipment

On vacation for space reasons I always wear few lenses, in this case I used the 50mm sony f1.8, it was the longest lens I had brought ... I do not like the telephoto lenses. It's an economic goal but optically in my opinion very valid. Then I used my sony A7ii on a tripod.

Inspiration

I had never photographed the lightning before, but in those days in Sardinia it was raining often and violently, going to the sea was impossible and I was irresistibly attracted by the electric spectacle of nature.

Editing

I always do a bit of post processing to my photos. In these cases it is essential to correct the white balance to avoid photos from improbable colors ... The camera in fact makes an average reading of the white balance, but in these cases often the ground and sky need 2 different balances to give the photo a more beautiful and realistic appearance.

In my camera bag

Depends on what I photograph, I have two main genres that I like to photograph, portraits and landscapes, I currently only a Sony A7II and some lenses, a 16-35 f4 I use for landscapes, 50mm, 28mm, some Samyang portrait lenses and some vintage lenses. If I go out to do portraits I have the camera and a pair of speed lenses, like 50mm and 85mm, if I go out to photograph landscapes I have the camera, a wide angle, ND filter, polarizer and the inevitable tripod, I have three of different weight and stability .

Feedback

I'm not an expert on lightning photography, but let's say a couple of things I think I've understood. Need a nice storm, a place sheltered from the rain and with a good view, maybe you are far from trees and tall things that can attract lightning ... then you need long exposure techniques, that is when you know that you're about to fall lightning open the shutter, when you see the lightning, close the shutter. Composing a good shot of course is essential, always.
