I took this photo with my girlfriend in our house in Concord, California.Time
This is one of my favorite photos. My girlfriend and I had just adopted our new kitten, Otis. He was exploring his new home and inspecting all of our furniture now that he could remain within a close proximity of my girlfriends legs, which seemed to be his safe zone. He's quite curious.Lighting
I always keep my blinds fully closed so that the light coming through is dispersed evenly through my living room. I frequently ambush my girlfriend and our cats with my camera so softening the natural light coming through the windows is critical.Equipment
I use a Canon 6D and a 135mm f2 L. This is one of the best portrait lenses you could invest in if you use Canon.Inspiration
As soon as I saw how curious Otis was I was immediately inspired to grab my camera. He has so much expression in his face and his body language is so clear as he investigates his surroundings. I merely posted myself at the end of the kitchen with my long range lens and took tons of photos as he moved about the house.Editing
I always do camera and lens corrections post process using photoshop. Then I add incredibly slight adjustments to the highlights and an almost unnoticeable vignette to the shadows around the edges of the subjectIn my camera bag
I always have my Canon 6D, and a variety of portrait lenses. I carry Canon's notorious 40mm Pancake 2.8 as my walk around lens, the 90mm Tamron 2.8 Macro, the 135 Canon f2 L, and the 70mm Sigma 2.8 Macro. I love macro lenses because they are well known for being tack-sharp. As a professional as well as an enthusiast, sharpness is critical. Each of the lenses I carry have their own distinct personalities, which strengthen the shot depending on the subject.Feedback
If you are used to shooting wide angle shots for your portraits, give one of the lenses I carry a shot. You'll find that these focal lengths create an intimacy with the subject that you just can't capture with a wide angle, even if you feel far away! Also, try and pay attention to the unique characteristics of your lenses! The feeling of a photo isn't based solely on the subject, your equipment makes a difference.
