A Christmas classic. If this image is not on a Christmas card, it should be.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shoot in my home basement. I was taking a photo class and weekly assignment was still life with special light source.

Time

I shoot this photo on November 26 2014 at 8:10 PM.

Lighting

As I mentioned the weekly class assignment was to use a special light source. I just happen to see some candles to the fireplace mantel and decided to used them for the light source. I wanted the soft candle light to light up the holly piece and have the remaining photo to remain black. All the lights were out in the basement so the only light source was the candles.

Equipment

I used my Sony Cyber-shot for this photo. It was the only camera I had at the time. I used a tripod because I had to use a longer exposure. This Sony camera has a built in macro/zoom lens.

Inspiration

Besides it being an assignment it was approaching Christmas and we wanted to do something different for Christmas cards that year.

Editing

I really did not do any post processing. I was new to photography and at the time I did not know how to do that. I had a vision of what I wanted the photo to look like before I shoot it and spent some time determining the proper exposure to use to get the effect I desired. I was pleased that I was able to get the desired effect.

In my camera bag

I now use a Nikon D3200 camera body and have two lens for it (15mm to 55mm) and (55mm to 300mm). I still carry my Sony camera and still use it occasionally. It actually allows me to zoom closer than the Nikon 300mm lenses allows. I do not carry a camera bag or backpack. I found a photography vest that allows me to store all my lenses, filters, lenses cleaning cloth, and remote shutter release. This vest allows me more freedom because everything is easily available. I do carry a tripod depending on where I am going and what I plan to shoot.

Feedback

This photo is all about the lighting. I did not take many photos of this still life arrangement. I really thought what exposure, white balance, and aperture settings I should use to get the photo I desired. As I said I did not know about post processing at the time so it was important to get it right up front. I still believe getting the best shoot up front is better and not lean on post processing to fix the shot. I have since learned Photoshop and use it, but still try to do all the important brain and creative work upfront.
