Grand Jury Winner

"What a beautiful expression! This image conjured up reminiscences of my beloved world of fine art painting. Particularly of the Dutch School and the magnificent works of English painter, Joseph wright of Derby. The image captures the almost magical fascination that children have with candles and fire. Watching the flame dance in front of her eyes. Maybe a little too tight in the frame and certainly, more space would have made this a real work of photographic art." - Martin Grahame-Dunn

Runner Up

"A stunning example of an homage to 18th century painting. The lighting direction is well handled and certainly in context of the period but the cable itself is a feature rather than a contributory form of illumination. Another magical expression in this strong competition. A little hint though, with those catchlights in the eyes. Keep them clean and certainly within the iris. Remember, an artist of the time’s last master’s touch would be that dot of zinc white that draws us all to the power of the eyes and expression." - Martin Grahame-Dunn

Runner Up

"This delightful still life certainly does justice to the title. Well constructed and visually choreographed and most certainly an excellent use of the candle light itself. Just a small hint, be aware of horizon lines or indeed any lateral line in such a graphic image. A little simple straightening can go a long way. " - Martin Grahame-Dunn

Runner Up

"In the true spirit of the competition this image is a candle lit portrait displaying the peace, symmetry and harmony that the subject matter envisages. Working in the warm limited colour palette offered by the candle light it is easy to focus on the central subject while absorbing the surroundings. Well done Drew!" - Martin Grahame-Dunn
