Location
This photo was taken in Miyagawa-Cho, one of the Geisha District of Kyoto, Japan.Time
When in Kyoto, I often go to Miyagawa-Cho at the end of the afternoon. This is when the Maiko (apprentice Geisha) and the Geisha walk around, from their Geisha House (Okiya) to the Tea House (Chaya) where they'll meet their patrons for the evening. They usually walk fairly fast to avoid being late and it's therefore quite difficult to capture their photo on the go. I had enough light for a 1/200 shutter speed and this enabled me to get good focus. The photo was taken at the end of March, at 5:39 pm.Lighting
Nothing special to say about the lighting. It's all natural (it would be against the "etiquette" to use a flash for such photo) and at this time of the year, we get more light every day.Equipment
My usual Nikon D810 with my usual Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8.Inspiration
I'm captivated by the world of the Geisha in Kyoto. It's so mysterious, so different from anything I know. They continue to keep the tradition alive and I love the style, the kimono, the beauty of it all.Editing
Minimum post-processing. Some basic tone adjustments, a bit of retouch on the face, and mainly cropping to center properly the face.In my camera bag
Well, I usually do not carry a bag. I go out with a purpose in mind, an idea of the type of photos I'd like to capture. I therefore only carry one lens with me, attached to the camera body. No filter, no tripod, nothing else.Feedback
In the case of street photography, one needs to keep an open eye for everything around. Indeed, in places like New York, anything and everything can be the subject. In Kyoto in this case, however, the subject is limited to the Geisha walking around the street. The idea is to concentrate on them while avoiding any possible distraction such as other passersby, automatic vending machines or the like. Of course, one needs to be alert and ready, and mainly very patient. I have been there quite often and do not always bring back a photo!
