Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was made in the park surrounding the Chishaku-in Buddhist Temple in Kyoto, in November, during the peak of the Fall foliage season. I like this temple for various reasons -- it isn't far from where I live, it is not a touristic place and features a wide spacious park with beautiful maple trees.
Time
The photo was captured just before noon. Thanks to a slightly overcast sky, I was lucky to have such a gentle and soft light.
Lighting
Despite the worse possible time to be outside to make photographs, on that day, I was really lucky to have an overcast sky and a gentle and soft light. I tried my best to take advantage of this situation.
Equipment
I usually use my Nikon D850 and my favorite lens, a 70-200 mm zoom. The aperture is often left at f2.8 to enable me to isolate and separate my subject from the background with a shallow depth of field.
Inspiration
The idea was to combine two symbols of Kyoto, the city where I live in Japan. The beauty and the grace of the young maiko (apprentice geisha) are definitely unique to this city, and the colors of the maple trees during this beautiful fall season is certainly another reason so many people come to visit at this time of the year. By combining these two symbols, my idea was to create a more powerful and symbolic photograph.
Editing
I used Lightroom for basic tonal adjustments and then used Photoshop to reinforce the tones and colors atmosphere of the background while isolating the model further with a slightly added sharpness. A handmade light vignette was the final touch.
In my camera bag
I often only have my Nikon D850 and either the 70-200 mm f/2.8 zoom or the 24-70 mm f/2.8 zoom. And depending on my intended subject (street photography, festival, or others), I also use fast prime lenses such as a 24 mm f/1.4 or an 85 mm f/1.4 -- yes, I do like shallow depth of field.
Feedback
Come to Kyoto, or any place you like, meet a maiko or any subject with grace and beauty, wait for the right season and the right weather (read the right light), and then find a nice spot. Add to this a little technic and a touch of luck.
