A friend of mine makes his living as a musician. He wanted to have some professional photos for press releases and marketing. This photo here I liked a lot but not for him, it did not have his face in it. fortunately for me it was a very well received shot, where ever I show it. So, I shot the photo in the studio with three strobes.Time
shot in the studio time of day does not matter? around 2pmLighting
three strobes, One key, back light, and the fill was a foam core, placed opposite the key with a distance to only fill 1/4th of the key. The third strobe was on the background. the ratio was 4 to 1.Equipment
Nikon D200, Nikon 60mm, strobes, in studioInspiration
musician friend needed promotional and marketing images. I seen the black and white as I shot it. The musician looked impressive to begin with and the angle is what gives this it's feeling. I like shooting musicians that really get into their music and this musician did.Editing
RAW image was color corrected and then converted to black & white in photoshop. HDR was added to give more texture. When adding HDR be careful not to add too much! It depends on the image of how much you can ad. Some images you cannot ad any it looks over powered by the effect and just does nothing but ruin the image. I find black & white images are the best for HDR especially if the have texture. Texture like people, wood, buildings. Test the HDR and see if it still looks like a great photo and not an overpowered photo with pushed colors or added ghosting lines. In my camera bag
every job is different. this being in the studio. I generally have a set of prime lenses and 1 zoom. I hardly use zoom lenses except for sports, events and live situations. If I have total control of the shoot, (which I like) I always use prime lenses. in my bag 15mm, 24mm, 50mm, 60mm micro, 85mm, 180mm, this would be for the studio. I do bring a short 12-24, and a 70-200 Nikon 2.8, even my 300mm, at times but mainly on location shoots.Feedback
since you mainly shoot digital and not film as I learned on, you can shoot as many images as you want. In my learning day it was very expensive to buy, process and print film, so we had to budget our shots. shoot, shoot, and shoot! take notes of what you did. experiment and remember why it worked or did not work. trying to capture an image like this one is really pretty simple. Once you have learned to light people, the lighting is the easy part, it's working with the talent as a director to get what you want from them.
