The Nantucket Lightship (shown here) at home in Nantucket Harbor ‘back in the day’… The ‘LV112’ is the largest lightship ever built, served on the Nantucket Shoals longer than any other. She became a National Historic Landmark (sic!…) in 1989. After being decommisisioned in 1975, she was brought to Nantucket to be a museum. But after about a decade, costs became a major factor and she’s had several homeports after that (Portland, ME; NYC; Staten Island & Long Island, NY; Bridgeport, CT), for the same reason, until 2010, when a new non-profit was established to restore her to all her glory. She’s now in East Boston for that restoration by the United States Lightship Museum. She is definitely my favorite coastal icon. I’ve shot her hundreds of times in many locations along the Eastern Seaboard. But those days back in Nantucket Harbor are still my favorite…
