Location
This photo was taken in Dunrobin, just outside of Ottawa, Canada's capital. I went down to the beach to take pictures of the sunrise, and this buck walked right into my shot!Time
This was early morning and the sun had just started to come up. I was shooting the sunrise and had just decided to turn my camera upriver to get the fog coming off the water. I heard a noise coming from the forest, and this deer slowly walked out into the water. He was a good distance away, so I used the boat lift that was then onshore as a tripod. I took a lot of shots of him, but this one had the right angle and head position.Lighting
I just used the natural light of the sunrise.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon EOS REBEL T2i, 1/60, f/6.3, ISO 800 with a Tamron 18-200 zoom lens.Inspiration
It is very rare to actually witness a deer come down to the water for a drink, let alone wade out as far as this one did, so that there was a full reflection. The water was glass flat, and there was fog just lifting off of the river. What could be more perfect?Editing
I used Photoshop to brighten and smooth and fix some noise from the highish ISO.In my camera bag
Canon Rebel T5i with a Canon 18-200 zoom, Canon 70-300 zoom, Canon Rebel converted to infrared with a Canon 18-135 lens. Many times I am walking around with two cameras around my neck, so I like the versatility of those lenses.Feedback
Sunrise in a secluded place along a body of water can bring out different animals coming down for a drink. You have to have an extraordinary amount of luck to be at the right place at the right time. I lived on the river for many years and only saw deer go into the water for a drink twice. The other time was on a very hot afternoon and it was a mother and fawn. I had to run up to the house to grab my camera and managed to get some good shots, but they were much farther away and the setting and lighting weren't as good.
