You are kind of right. It was -20F and some of it turned into ice before it hit the ground.

Location
Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park Wyoming, USATime
It was around midnight and close to -30F.Lighting
It was extremely cold and had to keep my lens covered because the mist from the geyser would freeze on my lens and had to keep the camera close to my body to keep it warm.Equipment
The Nikon D800 was on a tripod, 14-24mm lens at 16mm, f/2.8, 15 seconds, ISO 1000 and no flashInspiration
I wanted to capture Old Faithful at night to have something different and got really lucky to have the buffalo at the base of the geyser.Editing
I didn't have to do much to the photo except some minor adjustments in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I usually carry my Nikon D800, 14-24mm, 24-70mm (my favorite lens) and 70-200mm when I shoot landscape. I love the ThinkTank ShapeShifter backpack.Feedback
Night photography is a fairly challenging art. If you want to capture the night sky without having streaks from the stars you need to keep the "600 Rule" in mind. The 600 rule is basically you divide the true focal length of the lens into 600 to get approximately the max shutter speed you can take the photo. For example: If you have a full sensor camera and using a 24mm lens you can use the 600 rule to figure out the max shutter speed. 600/24=25 The max would be 25 seconds. With that in mind, you set your aperture to the widest as it can go, set your shutter speed to 25 seconds, and play around with the ISO until you get the shot you like. (Goes without saying, you must have a good tripod and shutter release to get a steady shot.)
