I build a small studio on top of my garage a few years ago so I don’t clutter up the living room with my photo projects - my wifes suggestion !Time
It was in the evening on a weekend.Lighting
I wanted the light to come out of the guitar like sound and fall on a music sheet. For that I had to take of the strings, install a small torch light inside and then put the strings back on again. Then I lowered the room lights.Equipment
I placed the camera on a tripod and used a 50mm lens.Inspiration
I wanted to take a picture of a guitar in a different way and I wanted the light to be like sound, coming out of the guitar and connecting with the written music, I choose “Michelle” from the Beatles ! I looked at guitar pictures in the internet and didn’t find one like that. But I made a small mistake placing the guitar the wrong way up, note the base strings are below and the melody strings are on top - difficult to play like that, never mind !Editing
I adjusted the light in photoshop and added some traces of light beams to enhance the light coming out of the guitar. In my camera bag
I just bring my 24-105 canon zoom lens and for the rest it depends on my project. For landscapes and night shots I bring my tripod, for indoor people shots my flash. It reslly depends what project I have in mind.Feedback
I am always looking for an theme coupled with an idea. It could be a macro flower or insect, a food shot, a water splash, a still set up or a portrait. Then I try and figure out the light and equipment I would need. My tip would be to search the Internet photo sites for similar pictures to see some end results of the and then try to match it, but in your own style. The main thing is having fun, even if it doesn’t always work out the way it was imagined, it’s a learning progress too.
