I took this colorful shot at the Makawao Rodeo July 4th weekend they hold annually here on Maui. He opened the rodeo this very hot and bright sunny dayTime
This was late morning, early afternoon after the 4th of July parade was finished in town of MakawaoLighting
Light as you can see was a challenge but I managed to get his face without the shadow and had to wait until he went around and faced towards me.He went around one other time before I got this.Equipment
This was taken on an older camera Canon Rebel T5, no flash, handheld with zoomInspiration
What is not inspiring about a cowboy at a rodeo on 4th of July carrying the American flag. An all American shot I thought it was. THe action shot, the light, the composition the subjects all had to come together and was great practice for me.Editing
I went slightly HDR on this shot bringing out the color and details. When I do post process I use lightroom, Photoshop, Corel and Topaz toolsIn my camera bag
I primarily use the Sony A 7RII with a SEL 18-200mm F 3.5-6.3 lens NOW. I also carry a backup , the Canon Rebel 5 and used it here before I got the Sony. Although the Canon is not my favorite, one never knows when I will need those lenses or the camera. It is always wise to carry MORE. In my backpack extras of everything including car chargers, plenty of batteries and memory cards as I shoot in RAW format.I carry also the tripod and monopod with me and an umbrella, flashlight, and Macro tubes.Always learning and so my equipment grows with it. I don't forget the business cards and ipad. I try to be prepared for any shot that could come along.Feedback
I am a landscape photographer primarily so I need Patience and lots of it at times! Take risks, shoot outside your comfort zone and get creative, get low, get high, shoot in the dark, shade and sun, shoot everything and then go with what feels right for YOU.I have learned alot more since taking this photo as I always am inspired to keep learning. Look at the angle, composition, what is it you want your viewers to know about the subject? Do you have tripod, optics clean, batteries, card in place? In other words have learned to be in the moment and really think and compose the shot I want. Sometimes I do and sometimes I forget but no matter what I just do it! I always stay open to learn more!
