Behind The Lens
Location
I took that photo behind my house in Grund b. Gstaad, Switzerland. The town above the house is the famous Luxury resort Gstaad in the Bernese Alps, Switzerland.Time
The photo was made between 10 and 11 pm in August 2016.Lighting
The picture is a long exposure, made out of nearly 150 single pictures. In the sky you can see a lot of stars, but also quiet some falling stars in that clear night. The grass around the house is lightened by the moon that was shining quiet bright that night.Equipment
I used my brand-new Nikon D500, the 10.5mm fisheye and a Gitzo Tripod with a Manfrotto head. Obviously no flash and a long exposure time.Inspiration
That day, I bought my new Nikon D500 that replaced my faithful D300 which I used for nearly 9 years. I wanted to test and compare the quality of the sensor, specially in long exposures at night where it's important to have as few picture noise as possible. I was positively surprized by the quality of the sensor of the D500 and am looking forward to hopefully many other night sessions.Editing
I processed the NEF-Files - cleared up the dark parts and had a good eye on the contrast, specially in the sky section with the stars. Then I saved all the single pictures as jpg's and put them all in one file in which I made the lights shine trough the layers to get the trail-effect in the sky.In my camera bag
Additional to my Nikon D500, I always take some lenses with me, normally the 12-24 mm wide angle and the 17-55 mm standard-Lens. If I think to use it, I also pack my Fisheye. Depending on the plans I have, I take the tripod or leave it home. Just shortly I began to make experiments with some filters which also always find a place in my bag. When I go paragliding, I only take the camera (most of the time the D300) and the wide angle lens or even the fisheye.Feedback
Depending on what you would like to show on the picture, it's important to be aware about where the moon is and how big it is at that night. The moon can be a great source of light to brighten up some areas in the picture, but it can also destroy a picture when he is at the wrong place at the wrong time.
