Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my upstairs loft at home where I often setup studio shots. However, the world is my studio.

Time

This shot was taken in the afternoon when my model (my grandson) was doing anything in particular at the time. He often spends his time gaming so I was lucky to snag him this time of the day.

Lighting

The model was lying on the floor so I used a cool soft light low from the side since I wanted some shadow to remove the flat look on the paper and models face. It gave me just the right amount of shading I was looking for.

Equipment

This was shot freehand with a Canon 7D with a 500mm prime lens, with a cool light.

Inspiration

My grandkids are my biggest inspiration and they are always around. The context of the shot, shredded paper has been something I've toyed with in the past, but not with a model involved. I recall thinking, "How could I use shredded paper and make it look hair?". This was the result, and my Grandson was quite the trooper while I setup the messy shot. I was very happy with the results.

Editing

I made some modifications in temperature and color balance, and added some dodging and burning to enhance the contrast between lights and darks.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 7D, and lately my drone, multiple lenses for any purpose, cleaning products, shutter controls, a tripod, and multiple memory cards.

Feedback

My best advice here is when shooting kids, be playful in setting up the shot. Let your inner child come out to play. Even let the child suggest how they would like to be shot. I get so many nice child portraits when letter the kids choose the pose or situation. Also, keep your camera on high speed if possible since that perfect expression could be fleeting.
