Out in the wild of Mexico on our research boat, it was such a treat to have this curious juvenile humpback whale come look us right in the eye with the clouds reflecting perfectly on the surface of the water!
This is one single original image, some slight lighting adjustments.

We set out on our small fishing boat early in the morning I spotted a spout from 3 miles away, we decided to check it out. After meeting up with the juvenile humpback I spotted we had a lovely encounter for a few hours into the full sun of the late morning when I hung off the side of the boat to capture this image as the majestic creature did barrels rolls to look up into my eyes.Lighting
Shooting out on the calm water & working with the natural is like a dream for me.Equipment
I used my old nikon D3100 & 18-55mm kit lensInspiration
This particular individual was quite intrigued with us and our little research team and followed us for numerous hours in a curious fashion. At the moment when I took this shot the clouds were reflecting on the surface of the water creating a dreamy double exposure feel as he looked up into my eyes. It was a breathtaking moment of connection between different species.Editing
I brought this image into photo shop and did minor color correction and light adjustmentsIn my camera bag
At the time I had my old nikon D3100 & 18-55mm kit lens and a 70-200mm zoom. I now carry 5D Markiii, 40mm 70-200mm 28mm lenses, a tripod, remote trigger, macro filters, polarizer, camera rain jacket.Feedback
