Behind The Lens

Location

This picture of the musk ox was taken in Dovrefjell National Park In Norway, where is one of the few places in the world where u can meet this animals. The norwegian musk consists of approximately 300 animals. The musk and was imported from Greenland in 1925-26, but was all killed under second world war, and new was imported in 1947. They are protected by law in Norway now.

Time

We was go to a place in Rondane early this morning, for make pictures of the sunset in the mountains. We started at 4:30 in the morningand we had a great sunset in Rondane, when a Photofriend was call me and asked about I could go with him to Dovrefjell. That was about 2 hours driving from the place where I been so I was meet him at the road there. After a couple of hours we was meet a lot of musk, about 20, and this musk ox was very gallant, but clever herd. But I got this picture of him. I think it is in "the worst time of the day for good light " in many photographers mind, about making photos at 12am.

Lighting

The mountain behind the musk ox is a well knowed mountain in Norway, Snøhetta, and because it was allready snow on that mountain, and snow and coldness is right environment for the musk I felt it important to get it in the lens with the musk ox. The light was good, and the sun was behind a weak cloud when I shoot the picture.

Equipment

Well as normal when I walk in the nature, I feel for not bring to much equipments with me. I used a Nikon D800 and a Nikon 28-300 mm lens

Inspiration

Well it was a meeting with the big musk ox in the early autumn time. I dont have more need for inspiration for a picture like this ;)

Editing

I allways do my picture in RAW, so the editing was done there to for make ballance of lights and shaddows. A bit darkening of mountains in the bacground. And the picture is croped a bit.

In my camera bag

I normally have 2 Nikon D800 in my bag. At one I have a 28-300 mm lens, and at the other camera I have a 12-24 mm lens. The reason that I use 2 kameras, is to avoid the dust at the sensors by changing lens.

Feedback

If meeting musk you have to be carefull. It says it has to be a safe zone at 200 metres between you and the musk. Be vigilant and if you feel they are being bothered by your proximity, retreat. The musk is normally about 200 kilos, and their runspeed is up to 40 miles /hour.
