Location
This photo was taken in Lincoln, ME in fall.Time
It was taken late in the day as the sun was just starting to dip towards the tree tops - that time of day where the work day has felt long and is nearing its end.Lighting
Since the setting was outdoors it was all natural lighting. The day was free of clouds so the position of the motorcycle and the strong sun created sharp highlights which at first I thought would be too overpowering especially on the his boots however, they really created striking contrast in the black and white image which I chose to keep. Also, I wanted it to feel as if the model was relaxing in the afternoon sun of fall and catching the special bit of warmth the fall afternoons bringEquipment
This photo was captured with just my Canon Rebel and standard 18-55mm lens. No tripod. No flash.Inspiration
I have always felt this nostalgic connection to the past and it is a constant inspiration in my work. I love to create work that transports the viewer to another time and place. This in addition to a rich family history of motorcycle riders and lovers were my inspirations for this piece.Editing
This image was first captured in color before becoming a black and white photograph. I do this as part of my process so I can experiment with vintage inspired filters and more but with this particular photograph I knew during the process it was going to be a black and white image. I envisioned it in black and white before I even picked up my camera to take the photo as I looked at the setting, model, lighting, and all the other elements. It just seem to fit so perfectly. In my camera bag
2 cameras at all times (you never know!) in addition to lenses + an extra battery pack. Just in case! Also, I'm somewhat of a neat freak so my cleaning kit never is far from reach.Feedback
If you are looking to create an image that is supposed to take the viewer to a different place or time be sure to keep the distractions out of the image as much as possible (even though of course with some locations this isn't 100% plausible). The human eye is clever at finding inaccuracies! Always be open to the artistic dialog between nature, your vision, and your camera. You never know what surprising elements nature might throw your way and have it create something unique you love in the image.
