Location
This photo was taken at the local dance studio where I work as a dance instructor. It also happens to be the same dance studio where I grew up dancing from age 3 onward. The location and subject matter both have a very personal meaning to me. The feet picture in the photo happen to be my own. When rehearsing my own choreography one day I decided to capture the experience with a tripod & timer.Time
Late afternoon before the start of classes that run late into the night. Going in early when the studio is empty just to rehearse and get warmed up is probably the most calming time a dance studio ever sees. This time of day when the doors open & the floor is yours is magical. It's the most intimate time to those working solo before classes begin. It's a deep breath before the plunge into the crowded, high intensity classes.Lighting
The building has these massive, somewhat obnoxious overhead lights. Even though they are finicky & flicker on and off often they create beautiful reflections on the floor.Equipment
The only equipment used in this photo was my camera (believe I had my Canon Rebel on this particular day, it was very spur of the moment so I'm unsure) & tripod.Inspiration
My inspirations for this photo were to capture part of that intimate time where I was the only one on the dance floor, rehearsing in the empty studio. It was just my feet on the floor - my tools for my craft & one of my many passions.Editing
I first took this photo in color even though in my head it was planned out to be a black & white shot.In my camera bag
The equipment that I carry varies greatly. Many times I am on the go because I have two jobs so I carry my Sony Cyber-shot cameras in my bag at all times. When I plan ahead & have to bring other equipment I have my Canon Rebel with many lens options, two tripods (one short & one tall), and of course back up batteries & chargers. Never want to be stuck with a dead battery!Feedback
For dancers, their bodies are their tools & their feet are the key aspect of this. Capturing a dancers feet is capturing part of them that is unique. You will find that no two dancers have the same feet & for each person a different style of dance, location in a class or practicing solo, a particular step, and more brings out their uniqueness. Look for what works for each individual dancer.
