Cormorants on the California coast appear to be spreading their wings in praise of the sun, but are actually in the process of drying their wings. Even though they dive into the ocean for fish, their wings are not "waterproof" like other diving birds, but only wettable, so after a time they must spread them in order for them to dry or it becomes difficult for them to fly. Photo captured near Asilomar on the Monterey, California coast.

Did you pay them all to pose just so for you, Nina? Truly remarkable! Love the orange sky and delicate rays! ッ

WOWSA a gorgeous silhouette capture. I too love how they spread their wing to dry. I loved my trip to Monterey. Only wished I'd been into photography at the time. Just absolutely fantastic capture!

Now what are the chances of this happening just when you had a camera in your hand! Way to go!

This is great! I initially though that they were crosses maybe from a church.
