Behind The Lens
Location
I took this picture in Buena Vista, Colorado. I was watching fireworks that were occurring at the airport a few miles from me, when suddenly someone started shooting them off about 500 feet from my vantage point. Thankfully I had my camera in hand to catch them!Time
It was around 9:00 in the evening. At the time I had not taken many photographs in this much darkness, but it was an exciting and unexpected learning experience.Lighting
I think what made this photo successful was the closeness of the fireworks. They were the only real source of light at the time. I needed their brightness to contrast the dark sky.Equipment
I had my Canon Rebel t6i with my Sigma 70-350 lens. It happened so quickly that I had no time to set up a tripod...this was definitely an instance when having a steady hand came in handy!Inspiration
It was a spontaneous moment, when I saw the fireworks shooting so close to me. I just decided to give it a try and see what happened. It was definitely an experiment that yielded fun, exciting pictures that captured the celebratory attitude of the people.Editing
I heightened the contrast of the fireworks and enhanced the colors using the basic imaging software on my computer. In my camera bag
My go to camera body is the Canon Rebel t6i. Typically, when I am going out in nature to shoot, my Sigma 70-350 lens is the one I choose. I love this lens because it also has a macro function, allowing me to take close-up stills of flowers while remaining versatile enough to take long range shots. However, I also keep a Canon 18-55 with a wide angle lens attached, just in case I come across vast landscapes.Feedback
Even if the subject that you find is unfamiliar to you, take a chance and shoot. The results may surprise you, and you will definitely learn something in the process!
