I raced to the local marina at around 5:00 to take this photo. I could see that the sunset was going to be gorgeous, so I grabbed my camera. The spontaneous trip was well rewarded...it was one of the best sunsets I have ever seen.Time
It was around 5:00 in the middle of winter. The sun was just about to set, and the sky looked like it was on fire! I snapped a few photos, then sat and watched the colors weave through the clouds. It was so beautiful!Lighting
It can be a fifty-fifty chance with sunsets, but when the conditions are right, you won't be disappointed. I find that the best sunsets occur when weather is coming. There's enough disturbance in the air to really make the last bits of sunlight shine.Equipment
I used my Canon Rebel with a short Canon lens and Polaroid Wide Angle attachment. It's not my usual choice for photos, but I wanted the wide angle to capture the grandeur of the sky.Inspiration
It was completely spontaneous, and that's part of why I love this photo so much. I saw the sky darkening, the golden hues weaving through the clouds, and I remember thinking, "This is one to watch. Don't think about it, just go!" So I raced to grab my camera, switch the lens to a wide angle, and hop in the car. By the time I reached the marina, the sky looked like a brilliant watercolor painting. I remember jumping out of the car with the camera already on, hurrying to capture the beauty of the moment. It was the kind of sunset that leaves you speechless, and I was so grateful that I had followed my spontaneous instincts!Editing
I used a little color enhancement on the blue portions of the sky...the gold and pinks were so brilliant that the darker sky colors didn't show up as well. I chose to do this because I thought the photo needed that blue; it only enhances the other colors. In my camera bag
Normally I carry a Canon Rebel t6i and a Canon Rebel t5. I use a Tamron SP 150-600 mm for wildlife shots and a Tamron 70-300 mm lens for everything else. Since I like to travel light, I don't carry a tripod or my wide angle lens often, but they are on standby when I need them.Feedback
Always keep an eye to the sky at sunset...you never know when it's going to be a good one!
