Location
I took this photo in my makeshift studio (also known as my kitchen table.) I covered the windows around my kitchen table with blackout curtains, and I set the jacks on a mirror.Time
Since it was taken indoors, time of day was not relevant for this image.Lighting
I tried several methods of lighting before I was satisfied. I attempted to use displaced lighting with a slave flash, backlighting, taking down the curtains for natural lighting, and utilizing the various lights of my kitchen. Ultimately, the best lighting turned out to be just the flash on my Canon Rebel t6i. Sometimes the simplest method is best.Equipment
I used my Canon Rebel t6i with flash enabled, a canon 18-135mm lens, and a Polaroid telephoto wide angle lens.Inspiration
I took this during my first "studio shoot" in my kitchen. It was also my first attempt at using a mirror to achieve an interesting reflection. I specifically chose to use jacks as my subject because they were colorful and reminded me of fond childhood memories. After I processed the image, I was struck by the dynamic nature of the jacks and their reflections. I was reminded that in childhood, our experiences are often bright and clear, but as we age, the details blur in our memories, much like the reflection in this image.Editing
I enhanced the colors so that they were impactful on the black background. In my camera bag
My go to camera body is a Canon Rebel t6i. I have three lenses that are my favorites: a Sigma 70-300mm lens with macro capability, a canon 18-135mm, and a Polaroid telephoto wide angle lens.Feedback
Play with lighting, angle, and subject matter.Try several methods of lighting. Move your subject matter, and don't forget to try moving the mirror around too. If you are shooting in a studio, you have the freedom to experiment, so do it! You'll never know if your ideas will be successful if you don't try.
