Behind The Lens
Location
Maeda Flats beach, Okinawa, JapanTime
It was the start of "golden hour", and I decided I needed to act on a photo idea I'd had for a while (I had also just gotten a new lens...so it needed to be tested). So I loaded up my camera bag and headed to the beach nearby to wait for just before sunset, which is when the photo was taken.Lighting
I picked this particular beach and time of day because the setting sun silhouettes the coral out cropping, as well as everything else on the beach. The shot would not have worked without this particular lighting and setup.Equipment
I used my Canon 40D with a Canon 10-22mm ESF lens. Both were put on my tripod (the Amazon brand light hiking tripod with a level).Inspiration
I love doing flips, and I love taking pictures, but I hadn't had much success doing both at the same time. By using the sunset to silhouette myself, I was able to buy myself a little more leniency in focus and timing (which is important if you're going to hit the shutter button and run in front of the camera to do a backflip).Editing
No post processing. In my camera bag
My favorite walkabout lens to use with the 40D is my Canon 55-250mm. I'm also a big fan of the 24mm fixed lens. I generally carry an extra battery or two, a cleaning cloth, a flashlight, a pen, and a snake hook (most of my pictures are animal photos).Feedback
Try to pick a place without sharp coral, I cut my foot during one of the 15+ flips done in attempt to time this right with the camera's timer. On that note, if you are planning to take photos of yourself doing something active, be prepared to do said action many times over.
