Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma.

Time

It was late morning, around 11 AM

Lighting

Full summer sunshine, no clouds or haze. The weather was great for lizard hunting, but it was very bright out.

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D Mk II and a Tamron 18-300mm lens. No other equipment was needed.

Inspiration

This species (Crotaphytus collaris) was the main animal I was hoping to see during a trip to the Wichita Mountains. Collared lizards are my favorite lizard species and I had been praying to find one in a good position to photograph. Partway up a long hike, several members of our group became tired and we decided to head back. As soon as we turned around, I spotted this huge male perched on a rock near a large drop. The lizard allowed me to approach very closely and get this photo before it ran away!

Editing

No post processing.

In my camera bag

My Canon 7D Mk II and Tamron 18-300mm is my standard all-around hiking set up. When weight is not a factor, I will usually bring my Canon 10-18mm as well.

Feedback

Be willing to put in the mileage during warm summer hours, and do research on habitat they are frequently spotted in ahead of time. Also, once you see the reptile you are searching for, approach very slowly, without any quick or jerky movements. Take photos incrementally as you approach, because the animal may flee at any moment.
