I took this photograph in Amsterdam when I went to visit the zoo. It was an exciting day photographing adorable and amazing animals.Time
It was midday and the animals had just been fed and were all feeling frisky and keen for their picture to be taken.Lighting
The sun was pretty high in the sky by this point so I didn't have much to work with in terms of creative light. I didn't want to use a flash because I didn't want to startle the animals.Equipment
The camera I used was my Canon 5D MKII, which is my personal favourite. The lens was a 24mm-70mm lens, which again is something I use quite often for spontaneous shots like this one.Inspiration
We were passing the enclosure for the Chimpanzees and they were all huddled together in the far enclosure and there was a crowd of five people trying to take their photos, but weren't getting anything good. I picked up my camera to do the same, when I saw one of the Chimps nudge a female Chimpanzee holding it's baby. The Mother stood up and swung her way over to me, with the baby still held tightly. She stopped right in front of me and held the baby towards me. I didn't waste time and started to take photo after photo. After about 30 seconds she got bored and made her way back to the group at the back. I felt blessed for the chance to get the images I did.Editing
I changed the image to black and white and added a very slight dark vignette around the edges, just to make the baby's face pop out of frame a little more.In my camera bag
I usually carry my Canon 5D MKII, a 24-70mm lens, a 50mm prime lens and a flashgun.Feedback
Just be ready for anything to happen. I could not have predicted the opportunity I was given when I first visited the zoo but if I had not been ready with my camera I would have missed one of the most perfect shots I was given.
