Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken along the Fox River in Carpentersville, Illinois.

Time

10:40am

Lighting

The lighting was very bright and sunny but the eagle was high in a tree and in a good position to avoid a great deal of contrast.

Equipment

Nikon D7100. Nikon 18-300mm. Hand-held.

Inspiration

I was excited to hear that there might be eagles in the area so my husband drove and we went looking along the river where there was open water. I spotted one way up in a tree so I jumped out of the car and waded through snow drifts to get as close as possible to the tree.

Editing

I had to do a lot of cropping due to how high the eagle was and I cropped this one to show more branches. I also sharpened and made minor exposure adjustments. This was done in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

My Nikon camera, Nikon lenses including a 12-24mm, an 18-300mm, a 70-200mm, an 80-400mm, a 50mm and a fisheye lens, extra cards and battery.

Feedback

Go out looking if the subject interests you. Sometimes you have to create opportunity. If I had stayed in my warm house, I would have missed this shot.
