This is beautiful and so clear. I love the uncluttered green background which goes so well with the green of the hummingbird.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard. This was my second year of shooting hummingbirds and not having just a blurred photo. I was shooting the hummingbird on my fence when it went to the Fuchsia hanging basket and I managed to capture this.

Time

It was taken later in the afternoon in July of 2015. The lighting is tricky by my house and in my yard due to an abundance of trees. I had spent the day going in and out of the house to check for any hummingbirds. The first year I finally got the hang of capturing hummingbirds was in 2014 and I only had one female that stayed around. In 2015, I had 2 females.

Lighting

The lighting is tricky in my yard due to an abundance of trees. I was lucky this day to have bright light but overcast so it was very even.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D610 with a 70-200mm 2.8 lens with a 1.4 teleconverter added. I had it on my tripod and I used my gimbal head which I find essential in shooting hummingbirds.

Inspiration

This was my second year of being able to capture hummingbirds that were sharp and to stop the motion of the wings. I practiced almost every day while they were in my yard. They are so fascinating and cute.

Editing

I did post-processing in Lightroom by sharpening my raw file and adjusting the white balance and exposure as needed and cropped it as well.

In my camera bag

Depending on where I am going to shoot, I carry my Nikon D7100 or D610 camera, my 2.8 70-200mm Nikon lens, my 1.4 teleconverter just in case and my 18-300mm Nikon lens or my 80-400mm lens. I also take my tripod and/or my monopod depending again on my destination. Extra batteries and SD cards are also essential.

Feedback

I can best tell everyone what worked for me. First of all being a self-taught photographer, I learned to shoot manually and to back button focus. I watched courses online, videos and read books. Then I got a really good quality tripod and a good quality Gimbal head and learned to use it. I bought plants that were recommended to me by a friend to attract the hummingbirds. Then I want outside and practiced a lot. I take a stool and set it up by my tripod and enjoy some coffee while waiting for the hummingbirds to show up. Patience is definitely needed because they are so unpredictable and fast. I remember the very first time 2 years ago when I shot a batch of photos of hummingbirds and downloaded them into my computer and saw that they were SHARP and that I had succeeded in stopping the action of the wings, I was so excited! I still love shooting them today (which I did actually.....) Photography makes me happy.
