Location
I took this photo in my backyard. I have been trying for years to capture hummingbirds/Time
It was taken at 11:58 a.m.Lighting
The lighting was overcast which was good.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7100 camera, my Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens with a Nikon 1.4 teleconverter and my RRS tripod with a gimbal head.Inspiration
I have only captured blurred photos of hummingbirds up to this point. This year I am completely shooting manually. I have been practicing with my tripod on other birds as well as hummingbirds and finally got the settings right. I have found that back focusing as well as the gimbal head has given me great success in capturing birds in general and finally hummingbirds. I love hummingbirds and was so excited to have captured this photo.Editing
I cropped the photo and did some noise reduction after doing some sharpening. I also did some minor exposure adjustments. In my camera bag
Depending on how far I am traveling, I carry my Nikon D7100 camera, a variety of lenses including my Nikon 50mm 2.8, 85mm 1.8, my 70-200mm and my 80-400mm Nikon lens. I also take my tripod with both a ball head and a gimbal head. I have extra cards and batteries.Feedback
A tripod is essential. I also learned to back focus which works amazingly well for everything I shoot. I prefer my gimbal head for shooting any kind of birds but especially hummingbirds. I set up my tripod and had a chair next to me and waited for the hummingbird to show up. Patience is essential because the hummingbird's arrival is completely unpredictable! The gimbal head allowed me to move with the hummingbird quickly as it flew from flower to flower.
