Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made at the Aquarium Inbursa, in a low light environment.

Time

The shot was made around 3 pm, but not natural light was involved in it.

Lighting

The lighting was curiosly low and very blueish, I think that the people at the aquarium meant to create a visually cold environment to match the penguin natural habitat.

Equipment

I made this shot with my Nikon D5000 on my hand, and my 28mm Nikkor lens, manual focus.

Inspiration

There was a colony of penguins. Almost everyone of them was moving fastly into the water, but this little fellow in the photo suddenly stopped in the glass and stared to a couple of children that were excited looking at him. For a few seconds they stared to each other, and then, the penguin moved away quickly, I was lucky to have my camera on hand, it all happened so fast. I have always found interesting how the communication happens among more natural beings. The children seems to be more connected to the nature than the adults, and it's amazing how some animals notice this fact.

Editing

Since I shot this frame in a low light condition, I used ISO 1250, so for post-processing I tried to decrease the noise in the image and give some light to the shadows to make more noticeble the contrast between the penguin's body and the water.

In my camera bag

I always bring with me my Nikon D5000, and depending on what am I going to shoot, I choose the more suitable lens for the ocassion. Since this photo was taken during a travel to Mexico City, I had my 28mm lens in my camera. Also, i use my cell phone camera when I don't bring my SLR camera with me, I have got very interesting photos with it.

Feedback

I think that the best advice is to shoot always! Even if the conditions seems not to be the most adequate to get a good shot, try as much as you can, always shoot. In the worst scenario, you will learn something new, and, believe it or not, you can bring some photos back from blurry memory card more frequently than you think.
