This picture reminds me of my first cat. He rests in peace now but he was very much like yours. Beautiful. And if I may guess... I bet very curious too.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while my indoor cat Tibble, a Maine Coon/Ragdoll was looking out our kitchen window bird watching. I got a new camera for Christmas and I'm enjoying learning everything I can about photography and truly loving every minute of it.

Time

It was a very clear sunny day and it was very warm outside considering it was February which is usually one of our colder months here in Canada but this year we were blessed with a very mild winter. The birds were also enjoying the day and definitely got Tibble's attention. The picture was taken on February 8, 2016 at 12:41 p.m.

Lighting

The lighting through the window was as perfect as it could get. My house is generally darker than most which can make it challenging finding the best time of day and place in my house to do indoor pictures with natural lighting but it's not impossible. Patience and lots of photos to find out what, when and where works best has been very helpful.

Equipment

I captured this picture with a Canon EOS 70D, 18-135 IS STM lens without any other equipment used.

Inspiration

Tibble was nine months old when I took this picture and he was an extremely playful kitty and if he wasn't sleeping he was on the move. I found out early on to always have my camera ready to click at any given time and this time Tibble was absolutely still as he was watching the birds. He never flinched or moved and was frozen in time as he instinctively didn't want to scare off his prey. This gave me the precious extra few seconds I needed to grab my camera and snap a picture before he was flying around the room again. When I downloaded my picture I was thrilled to finally capture him in all of his beauty.

Editing

I had very little post-processing on this picture to do. As most of the background was already fairly dark there was only a few areas around the outer edges that required to be darkened out.

In my camera bag

Being a fairly new beginner my bag at the moment is a bit sparse but I know this will change as I'm already looking at several other lenses and equipment that I would love to have. Along with my 18-135 IS STM lens I also have a Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 STM lens and UV and Polarizer filters. I really love taking pictures of any kind of wildlife and find that I have lots of ample opportunities to do so with Banff National Park only an hour and half drive away from where I live so my next purchase I'm looking at getting is a Canon EF 400mm F/5.6L USM lens. I'm also looking at acquiring a good wide angle lens for all the mountain/lake landscape pictures I'll be able to take. I'm also considering renting these lenses for a day to give them a try first before making any purchases as this to me is a huge investment and I really want a lens that will fit my needs and my skill ability for now so I honestly feel this will be the best route to go in choosing my next lens purchase.

Feedback

Capturing pictures of your special indoor feline can be somewhat challenging and patience will definitely be a virtue. I'm always watching Tibble when he's playing, grooming, hunting for bugs, wanting cuddles or anything where he gives off different moments of himself that make my heart go thump and those are the expressions that I know I want to capture to share with others. Opening doors and windows to let in as much daylight as possible is a must and taking pictures in every part of your home where your kitty travels is also helpful to find the best areas and time for getting the best shots. I also found that when wanting to capture a certain shot while Tibble is playing with toys it's best not to over do it as he tends to stop interacting with those items very quickly so I try to only bring them out for short periods of time and within a few days to prevent boredom, and the toys just being stepped over and forgotten. Also when using any type of props it would be helpful to have a remote on your camera to free up where you need to be during the shoot or have someone else assisting you. The most important advice I can give though is to always have your camera close by and ready to go as your kitty will probably only give you a few moments to get that cute shot you've been wanting but when you do the feeling is amazing.
