Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in an old mill in Lawrence, MA. I managed to get access to the 5th floor of the mill only one week before it was transformed into apartments. It was meant to be! There was no air conditioning and it was really really hot but the large windows and beautifully textured walls were just too good to be true :)

Time

This shot was taken at about 11 am. I remember it was a really hot and humid day and it was probably not the best time to be stuck here with no air conditioning, but it was the only time we had access to this beautiful building.

Lighting

I love working with backlight, it creates the most beautiful glow. Since it was about noon and the light coming through the window was not idea, I used large pieces of white plastic (I found at the site) to diffuse the light and get it to be this soft an beautiful.

Equipment

I show this with my Canon 5D MarkIII and my 24-70mm f/4L lens. I didn't use a tripod, flash, or reflector.

Inspiration

I love photographing beautiful subjects in rundown buildings. I am constantly asking people if they know of any abandoned buildings I can shoot, but I am a portrait photographer, so I feel the need to have a human subject to work with. This image is part of series we did inspired by light and dark. This is the light, soft with warm colors, and flows clothes.

Editing

While I post-process every image, there is very little done to this image. I color corrected the image and erased a couple of distracting elements from the wall behind the model

In my camera bag

Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. In case I need additional light I have a couple of Canon speedlites. I always have a grey card, a tripod, and a reflector with me. Also, in the back of my carI always have a small ladder, I never know when I am going to want to do levitation images or to shoot from a higher viewpoint.

Feedback

The secret is to make sure your model is comfortable.I like working with amateurs so I talk to them during the entire process and I make sure I tell them how to stand, and how to pose. Of course metering your light and framing correctly is important, but in a simple lighting situation like this I have learned that directing the model is just as important.
