Behind The Lens

Location

This bridge is on Hwy 72 about one mile north of Ward, Colorado built over James Creek. I thought is was a WPA structure when I first saw it just off the paved road. On searching the structure I found a brass elevation marker with 1928 U.S. Dept of Roads on it. On the right side of the bridge is an Aspen grove and wonderful colors. On the left is mostly pine trees.

Time

This was about noon in early October and the aspens were putting on their usual autumn display. We get tourists from all over the U.S. each year for the color change. The shade brings out a touch of blue in the stones and the weeds add some color and texture.

Lighting

The light was softened by some clouds and the trees, giving a more painterly effect.

Equipment

Canon 6D MkII and a 70-200mm Canon L lens

Inspiration

Love the look of this old bridge and have photographed it many times in winter, spring, fall and summer. This the best shot so far,

Editing

This a HDR image, processed with Photomatix and Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D MK II, 70-200mm, 24-70mm, 100mm macro and sometimes my 150-600mm. Occasionally I take along one of my infra red cameras, usually the Rebel T3i that I had converted to IR.

Feedback

Going back, if possible, to look at lighting and color. Try different times and compositions. One thing I would add that helped me, is to take a class on Design and Composition at a local community college. I learned a lot there.
