Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a nature park in Dania Beach, Florida.

Time

I like to get my day started early, especially here in Florida where the temps can reach the high eighties by 9 am. This particular photo was captured around 8:00 AM. I tried to find a location where there would not be too much direct sunlight so the trees provided much needed shade.

Lighting

I wanted this image to be shot with natural light so that I could keep it true to the vibe of the environment. I often shoot with strobes but this was not what I envisioned for this pose.

Equipment

I shot this without a tripod and used an 85 mm Prime Nikkor lens @ f/1.8 Nikon D600 Full Frame

Inspiration

My client wanted to do a shoot where she could be completely free. She had been through some stuff in her life and called me up to say that she wanted to do an implied session and that would only shoot it with me. The shoot turned out to be fantastic and liberating for her and I was honored that she would trust me with this intimate session.

Editing

Yes I did do some post-processing. I use my own actions that I created to smooth the skin (leaving some detail of course) and also added some color changes and highlights to her hair, eyes, skin and lips.

In my camera bag

I always carry my trusty light meter whenever I shoot. I always shoot with a shoulder strap and I always carry an assortment of lenses to match the environment I'm in. As mentioned, I have my 85 mm, 24-70 mm and a 70 - 200 mm and sometimes a 50 mm. I always have my D600 (now upgraded to a D850).

Feedback

If you're doing any implied or nude shoots, make sure that you keep it professional and classy. It certainly helps that when you're shooting this type of material, that you make your client as comfortable as possible. Look for beautiful light that will compliment the mood you're trying to create. Don't just rely on Photoshop, capture as much as you can in camera and then you can tweak it if needed.
