Location
This photo was taken in Davie, Florida in a beautiful park not far from where I live.Time
I took this image around 10:00 am under tree cover and out of direct sunlight.Lighting
I often try to balance the ambient with the fill flash using a Flashpoint AD600 and a 43" soft box. I always meter with a light meter before my shots so that I can get the best exposure and mood.Equipment
I currently shoot with a Nikon D850 but this image was taken with a Nikon D600 Full-Frame with an 85mm Prime lens.Inspiration
This was for a family portrait session and I wanted to highlight a young black father and his baby boy so I asked him to remove his shirt and hold his son close. Unfortunately you don’t often see this positive depiction so it was important to me to capture it. I lucked out when baby and dad started to smile at each other as they looked into each other’s eyes!Editing
Not much other than the black and white treatment in Lightroom and a little blemish removal. In my camera bag
I always have my trusty light meter, my 70-200mm, 85mm and 28-75mm lenses along with my D600 and D850.Feedback
You have to create an atmosphere that’s conducive to the family or subject being comfortable enough to be themselves so that they can give your lens a glimpse into their life. Talk to your clients while you shoot, get them to loosen up and set the temperature of the session. Get them to concentrate more on interacting with each other than with your lens and you will create magic!
