Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a basketball court on a Fort Lauderdale beach in Florida.

Time

We got to the court around 2:30 pm and started shooting right away. Not my preferred time of day to shoot but we needed to get there before the courts filled up with people.

Lighting

I knew the sun was going to be hot and high so I had my FlashPoint softbox mounted on a monopod and my assistant was able to adjust the angles so that I could combat the harsh rays. Had to adjust my strobe to full power because the sun was intense.

Equipment

I shot with my Nikon 70 - 200mm and my trusty Nikon D850 FlashPoint AD600 with extension head in a Godox 31.5" double-diffused softbox

Inspiration

I was shooting some activewear for a client and during the shoot I pulled in tight for a closeup of our model's face. It's something I always try to capture on any shoot just in case it turns out to be a beautiful image.

Editing

I do some skin smoothing and I like to retain as much detail as possible. I dodge any distracting shadows and brighten the irises. Since I knew I wanted to convert this image to black and white, I used the black and white adjust layer to tweaked the channels until I got the right balance of tones.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sekonic light meter, my D850, 24-70mm, 70-200mm Nikor lenses. FlashPoint trigger, extra memory cards, Nikon SB-910 speedlight and extra batteries.

Feedback

If you're shooting in high, intense sunlight, make sure that you have enough power to overpower the sun! Find a comfortable aperture...in my case I chose F8 so that I can retain the beautiful crisp colors of the outfits.
