Location
Valencia and I were looking for a location that had a somewhat urban feel to it so we visited the City Center in Miramar, Florida. We started shooting on the property when we were approached by the Property Manager. At first, I thought he was going to tell us to leave the premises, but instead, he directed us to a rooftop location that turned out to be perfect!! Turns out he was an amateur photographer himself so he was cool enough to give us exclusive access to this location that was not open to the public!Time
We started shooting around 9:00am that morning so that we wouldn't get burnt by the hot Florida sunshine.Lighting
For this shot, I didn't use a strobe because there was plenty of natural light to work with. I just had Valencia turn her back to the sun so that we could have a natural rim light. Then I brought up the shadows in post.Equipment
For this shot, I used an 85mm Nikon lens on my Nikon D600. No flash, no tripod.Inspiration
I love capturing beauty in natural and also urban settings. The juxtaposition of the beautiful lady against the concrete and the city in the background really moves me!Editing
For post-processing, I do the usual blemish removal and skin smoothing. I changed the tones, hues and luminance and vibrance to make her pop! Also added a matte effect which is one of my go-to effects. In my camera bag
I always carry my trusty Sekonic Light Meter, D600, extra batteries, 85mm, 70-200mm and my 24-70mm Nikkor lenses.Feedback
Don't be afraid to shoot wide open!! Use the exposure triangle to keep your ambient in check and definitely shoot raw so that you can recover highlights if necessary.
