Captured in: Bloomingburgh, NY
I've been interested in working with frozen soap bubbles as a photography subject for just about two years now. Unfortunately there's only a handful of opportunities to do this in New York each year, as the temperature needs to be at 17°F - -8°C or below with very calm winds.
I was originally inspired by an extremely talented photographer named Don Komarechka of Ontario, Canada. I had found some of his work online, and was captivated by the images in his gallery. I was amazed by the patterns and shapes that he managed to find in those frozen bubbles.
I had the pleasure of meeting him at a photography conference a few years back, and spoke to him about his work with these beautiful ice globes.
I finally decided to give it a go, as an early season cold front dove through the New York area. It took a while before I was able to figure out all the little details, but I finally got the hang of it. The image seen here was one of my favorites from this frozen bubble shoot - which included various gem shaped patterns in the frost.
I'm already looking forward to trying this again once winter takes a stronger hold on the Northeast.
