Between the Lateral West wildfire in 2011 and recent hurricanes, this bald cypress is a stark reminder of natures fury. The Lateral West wildfire burned for 111 days and claimed more than 6500 acres of woods and peat. Hurricane Irene dropped over 11' of rainfall, but the area drained so quickly that the fire wasn't extinguished; in fact, it made it harder to reach the fire that continued. It was estimated that the fire lowered the peat by nearly 1.5 feet.
