Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Utah at the Zion National Park on one of our road trips. We love seeing the beauty that this great nation has to offer. Many wonderful photo opportunities and so little time. I don't consider myself to be a professional photographer but I taught myself the little knowledge I do have. I will keep shooting as long as I still can and continue to enjoy.

Time

This is one of my favorite photos from this trip. I remember driving down the road and stopping every few minutes as there were so many gorgeous scenes. Most of my shots from this trip were handheld and there was plenty of daylight for this one at about 5:00 pm.

Lighting

Nothing but natural lighting with this photo. At 5:00 pm the sun is going down enough in these mountains that cause enough shadows for awesome photos.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 5D MK IV and Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. No other equipment involved.

Inspiration

The only inspiration you need is so much gorgeous scenery in this part of the country that you hardly have time to put your camera down. If there are places on your bucket list, make time to go and take in the all the majesty of this beautiful country of ours. Just do it.

Editing

Most of my landscape photos require some editing. All editing for this photo was done in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. I exposed for the sky on this one and brought out shadows in LR, adjusted for highlights and adjusted exposure and here we are.

In my camera bag

In my bag you will find my Canon 5D MK IV, Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM, Canon EF85mm f/1.4L IS USM, ND filters, Polarizing filter, extra batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

All the advice I can give you is to go out and shoot the kind of photos you like to take, and if you don't know what that is, just keep shooting and your style will appear on its own. For me it's landscape photography and a little bit of portraits. Be patient with whatever it is and wait for that right time of day for landscapes. This photo would have been totally different and probably a disasterous shot if taken in the middle of the day with a very harsh sun and no shadows. Keep doing what you love and your photos will improve with time as I feel like I have with my limited skill. Enjoy.
