Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on one of our favorite secluded Block Island, RI beaches.

Time

This image was taken at a sunset in mid-September when the island is not so crowded and the beach's only inhabitants seem to be scavenging seagulls, wave chasing terns, and shelter seeking sand-crabs.

Lighting

I always enjoy sunsets, especially on the beach, and find it is a great time for spectacular natural lighting with phenomenal cloud formations and vibrant coloring as well as sparkling water reflections. I strive to memorialize these moments, that nature supplies, as I see them through the lens of my camera.

Equipment

This photo was taken with an Olympus SP-620UZ camera with a zoom lens set at 55mm, an aperture of F11 and a shutter speed of 1/250 and ISO 80. The camera was handheld without a flash, filters or any other equipment.

Inspiration

The peacefulness of this time of day on the beach, together with the warmth from the sun and its vibrant orange hues glowing in the sky and reflecting on the water, as well as the sounds of the waves gently lapping on the sand and filtering through the rocks as the waves recede to where they came from, is always a moment, to me, worth capturing and preserving in an image to be shared.

Editing

I was so happy with the way this photo turned out that I decided it did not need an iota of post-processing.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Olympus SP-620UZ, my Nikon D7200, along with my Nikon 18-55mm lens, Nikon 55-300mm lens, Tamron 18-400mm lens, remote releases, extra storage cards, and batteries.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to try using as many different speed, aperture, ISO combinations as possible. Try varying your viewing perspective as sunset scenes change drastically and quickly with an inordinate amount of lighting situations waiting to be captured. And above all, remember to enjoy the moment.
