Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of the Bay of Fundy was taken from the deck of our dear Lubec, ME friends just before we were getting ready to feast on freshly caught and steamed Maine lobster and corn-on-the-cob.

Time

This photo was taken early evening after a great, full day of fantastic end of summer weather touring and exploring the area of our friends’ new vacation home.

Lighting

The lighting was a late summer, early evening, sky filled with broken clouds but completely natural lighting just before sunset.. I made sure the flash was disabled to ensure the warmth of the mixture of the orange setting sun and the natural glow reflected on the clouds would be preserved. I wanted to draw attention to the boldness and mixture of colors.

Equipment

This picture was taken with an iPhone 6s and no filtration, flash or tripod. Just hand held, at ISO 64 and an aperture of f2.2 and a 1/30 second exposure and a focal length of about 30 mm.

Inspiration

As soon as I saw the grandeur and beauty of the sky, I knew I had to capture it to send it to a close co-worker/friend who is a big fan of fantastic sunsets. It was really taken with him in mind and to share the moment of our experience with him and to preserve it. We also decided to put it on an 18” x 24” canvas and send it to our friends in Lubec.

Editing

I did very minimal post-processing, only slightly increasing the color saturation.

In my camera bag

As noted above, this picture was taken with an iPhone 6s since the moment did not allow time to go into my camera bag where I normally have my Nikon D7200 camera and my Nikon 18-55mm lens, my Nikon 55-300mm lens, my Tamron 18-400mm lens, a few macro lens adapters, a remote release and extra storage cards and battery.

Feedback

As you can see, great pictures can happen when you least expect it. Be prepared to do unusual things to capture the photo. Take as many pictures at varied angles and light situations as possible. Your rewards can be many and surprising. Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun being as creative as your imagination inspires you. Above all, just enjoy!
