Behind The Lens

Location

This little beauty was taken among all the other colorful blooming flowers located in the gardens of the Kula Country Market across the street from Rice Park. A rainy day it was and was there in the gardens to get some of those wonderful macro shots I love to take.

Time

This was about mid morning on a rainy day with overcast grey clouds as natural light filter for Maui's typical bright sunlight.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the drain drops as tiny as they were attached themselves to the soft hairs on this flower. The fact it was a cloudy day worked in my favor here. The natural light graced the hairs, made visible the drops long enough for me to get that shot.

Equipment

I used a Sony A7Rii with a SEL 3.5-6.3F 18-200mm lens and was trying out macro tubes in this shot. The use of two tubes 16 & 10 gave it an additional 26mm. No flash, handheld

Inspiration

I love taking macros in this spot and the view is gorgeous on any day over looking all the southwest side of the island and even the north shores with the west mountains meeting the oceans on all sides. I just got these macro tubes and wanted to try them out with raindrops, colors and flowers. I knew this would provide what I was looking for. I did not expect these pretty flowers to be blooming though so a pleasant surprise. I thought the hairs on these flowers and blooms would make a great subject to see how close and clear I could go. Water reflections would have been a little too uch to ask for since the flower pods are only 1/2 inch long at best held against the unrelenting rain. I tried though!

Editing

I enhanced some, added just a soft vignette to match the pedal colors and to enhance the delicate softness of what was there already.

In my camera bag

I primarily use the Sony A 7RII with a SEL 18-200mm F 3.5-6.3 lens. I also carry a backup , the Canon Rebel 5 but rarely use it anymore. Although the Canon is not my favorite, one never knows when I will need those lenses or the camera. It is always wise to carry MORE. In my backpack extras of everything including car chargers, plenty of batteries and memory cards as I shoot in RAW format.I carry also the tripod and monopod with me and an umbrella, flashlight, and Macro tubes.Always learning and so my equipment grows with it. I don't forget the business cards and ipad. I try to be prepared for any shot that could come along.

Feedback

Taking risks in stepping outside my comfort zone pays off. Practice, know your camera, and more practice to get to know your camera!! Take risks, get creative, get low, get high, shoot in the dark, shade and sun, shoot everything and then go with what feels right for YOU.I have my mentor in my head, look at the angle, settings, do you have tripod, optics clean, batteries, card in place? In other words have learned to be in the moment and really think and compose the shot I want. Sometimes I do and sometimes I forget but no matter what I just do it! Maui has such diverse climates, sunsets, sunrises. You really never know what to expect most of the time. Generally I know the land, the climates & what is usual but always ready and anticipating anything can show
