Behind The Lens

Location

Green patch beach, Jervis bay. Part of stunning Booderee National Park.

Time

Close to midnight great time to line up the milky way with western horizon.

Lighting

Lighting is very difficult one as there was no natural source. after setting up right exposure for the milky way we used head lamp torch to light up the ripple in the sand and the trees in the foreground only couple seconds.

Equipment

Nikon D7200, Tokina 11-16 F2.8, Vanguard alta pro tripod, led lenser head lamp.

Inspiration

Me and mate had tip off about bioluminescent sea sparkle in the bay previous night, so we took the 3 hr drive down south coast we spent 5hrs diving in the night around all the locations along the coast till we came across Green patch beach with this awesome sand ripple. we did not see enough bioluminescent so decided we wait for milky way to line up and wow i was glad we did turned out better then i thought and go home with something interesting.

Editing

i did tonal curves for milky way to help it pop, Bottom half warmed up the highlights from being blue using head lamp and reduced the exposure and gave it a faded look to help keep it more natural.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7200, Tokina 11-16 F2.8, Vanguard alta pro tripod, led lenser head lamp, Tamron 16-300.

Feedback

the most important tip for anyone doing astrophotography is to manually focus on biggest star in the sky, Using the live view helps significantly i see mistakes with everyone saying "put it on infinity she be right" then being disappointed when they get home it is out of focus.. every lens is different but focusing the star can be on either side of the infinity.
