Behind The Lens

Location

This is taken few mins from my home town of Buxton NSW, Australia

Time

I took this photo in the evening, I remember i was relaxing i was not expecting any storm for the day, when i got message from a group im in on FB about Fast moving storm from Bowral. only had few mins to get the camera and tripod rushed to the view looking west with in 5 mins this was the best lightning shot i ever got!!

Lighting

Lighting was perfect as sunset good 40mins before so was easier to set camera up for long exposure sit back relax let mother nature give light.

Equipment

Nikon D7200, Tamron 16-300mm, Carbon fiber Vanguard Alta Pro Tripod and simple plastic bag to cover the camera from rain.

Inspiration

I love everything to do with extreme weather it is what got me into Landscape photography. The excitement i get when lightning storm comes through and capturing the moment is perfect when you see the lightning crawl through the clouds is awesome but only last split second. and what the camera can capture i can always go back to enjoy and relive what i saw.

Editing

i kept the processing simple putting in some clarity and constrast to bring the details out correct the highlights and whitebalance.

In my camera bag

Spare batteries, Nikkor 50mm 1.8 Water, something to keep dry, several micro fiber cloth for cleaning dust or water from rain. i keep it simple and light.

Feedback

Setting up the camera settings before getting to location is a bonus when having limited time when chasing storms. have in mind good locations in your area with good view and subject is a bonus as well.. I normally have camera set at lowest ISO, F8-11 depending how much light there is having lower F stop during evening can lose detail from over blown lightning shot.. F8-11 find it to be sweet spot. set up camera to fire away with at a interval as to reduce camera shake good 5-30 secs are enough to capture the shot you need.
