Volrerra Italy is one of my favorite Italian Hill Towns. Visit if you Can. This image is of a Medice Fortress. From its hilltop vantage point above the town, the Medici Fortress dominates the skyline of Volterra. This colossal medieval stronghold is actually two castles joined together by a series of walls. Looking up at the enormous battlements, imagine how this huge structure served to protect the town. Today, the fortress is a prison and largely inaccessible to the public.
